Microsoft has launched Copilot Chat, a streamlined and cost-efficient version of its enterprise AI assistant, giving businesses more control over how they integrate AI into their workflows. Unlike the $30-per-user subscription model of Microsoft 365 Copilot, the new offering allows organizations to pay only for what they use -- making it ideal for teams with variable or exploratory needs.

Copilot Chat supports a variety of functions, from summarizing documents to fetching web data and executing tasks autonomously using user-defined agents. The technology runs on OpenAI's models and is already being deployed in Microsoft's workplace productivity ecosystem.

While it lacks the deep Office app integration of Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Chat offers wide accessibility through the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on mobile platforms and browsers. It's designed as a lighter, more flexible gateway into Microsoft's vision of AI-assisted work.

To use Copilot Chat in a business context, start by Buy Office 365 Accounts for your organization to ensure access and licensing.

Pricing is calculated per "message" -- the unit of user interaction with the Copilot AI. Basic messages cost one cent, while more data-intensive tasks cost more. For instance:

Answer from internal company files = 30 messages

Background task performed by an agent = 25 messages

This structure allows organizations to begin with minimal risk and scale up only if the value is clear -- a major advantage over paying upfront for full deployment. "It's a way for the value to prove itself," said Jared Spataro, Microsoft's AI workplace lead.

The timing is strategic. Microsoft's Copilot AI tools have been available since November 2023, but uptake was considered "underwhelming" by some analysts. This new model could accelerate adoption, especially among firms hesitant to invest heavily without proof of ROI.

And momentum is building. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said usage doubled quarter-over-quarter. Global corporations are already committing, with Accenture planning 200,000 user seats and UBS reporting 50,000.
